East Yorkshire > East Riding of Yorkshire

The East Riding of Yorkshire is one of the largest unitary authorities in England by area, covering almost 2,500 square kilometres and with 85 kilometres of coastline. The area has a population of approximately 336,500, of which over half are regarded to live in rural communities, many of which are small, scattered and isolated. The principal settlements include the historic minster town of Beverley, the seaside resort of Bridlington, the inland port of Goole, and the Haltemprice area to the west of Hull which includes Cottingham, Hessle, Anlaby, Willerby and Kirk Ella.

The area contains a diverse range of landscapes and seascapes, including the rolling chalk downland of the Yorkshire Wolds, the broad, gently-undulating Plain of Holderness, the flat, fertile farmland of both the Vale of York and Humberhead Levels, and the expansive wetlands of the Humber Estuary. These all possess a rich, varied and diverse landscape character, demonstrating the unique interaction of the physical, human and ecological influences that have shaped them over time.

The East Riding Local Plan Strategy Document was adopted in April 216, while the Allocations Document is still under ‘examination’. The Local Plan contains a range of specific polices relating to landscape, green infrastructure, biodiversity etc. The area has a county-wide Landscape Character Assessment, including a Selected Settlements update.
