South Yorkshire > Barnsley

Barnsley is a Metropolitan Borough in South Yorkshire and is part of Leeds City Region. The statutory local plan is the Core Strategy 2011 plus saved policies from the Unitary Development Plan, and associated documents. A new Local Plan is under preparation.

There is a diversity of landscapes in the Borough, ranging from the higher undeveloped moorland in the west, to the lower developed and industrialised farmland and river valleys in the east. Barnsley itself is a large town within the more urbanised east of the district. The western half of the borough stretches from the M1 to the edge of the Peak District and is rural in character, with Penistone being a local centre.

Barnsley Council has undertaken much urban regeneration. It has also been working in association with Burnley, Calderdale, Kirklees and Rossendale Councils on a study into the effects of wind energy development on the character and quality of the landscapes of the South Pennines.

Barnsley does not have any landscape specialists, with landscape related work falling to the Planning Policy Team
