West Yorkshire > Wakefield
Wakefield MDC is one of the five West Yorkshire unitary authorities and is within the Leeds City Region. The district adjoins South and North Yorkshire and is strategically located on the M1, M62 and A1.
The city of Wakefield is a Sub-Regional Centre with Principal Towns of Castleford and Pontefract, and Urban Areas of Normanton, Knottingley, Featherstone, South Elmsall, South Kirkby, Hemsworth, Horbury and Ossett.
69% of the district is Green Belt with a number of villages mainly in the south of the district. Notable attractions are the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, National Coal Mining Museum, Nostell Priory, Hepworth Gallery, Pontefract Castle and Sandal Castle. There are four Registered Historic Parks and Gardens and two local Historic Landscape/ Battle Site designations within the district.
As a result of its mining legacy the district has seven country parks on sites of restored mineral workings. Major urban regeneration projects are being carried out in Castleford, Knottingley and Wakefield including improvements to green infrastructure along the Aire and Calder Rivers and associated waterways.
The Council does not have a specialist landscape officer or urban design officer and engages consultants as required.
